The Existence of God

The Existence of God

What shape is the universe? It’s a funnel. No matter where you start, the evidences, laws, and eye-witness testimonies slide a person through to a particular point—God’s saving grace in Jesus Christ. God’s glory is everywhere in the universe through general and specific revelation and not only leaves a person without excuse to recognize Him but also points them to a necessary savior—Jesus Christ. God’s existence may be seen reasonably, beautifully, and undoubtedly in the following four areas.1

The Cosmos

The cosmos declare that God is real. When we look up at the stars and the universe beyond the earth, we see the divine handiwork of God (Ps. 19:1). There three basic options for the existence of the universe. Either it is eternal, self-created, or made by an outside force. The evidences, laws of the universe (such as the 2nd law of thermodynamics and the background radiation), and logical arguments (such as the cosmological argument and the fine-tuning of the universe) all point to an outside force, which we know is the God of the Bible. The Bible states (Rom. 1:19–20), “19For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” The cosmos speak every language to every person on earth that God exists (Psalm 19:1–4) and leaves them without excuse.

The Complexity of Life

The complexity of life declares that God is real. When we examine our bodies they reveal the skill of an intelligent designer. The way the eyeball transmits light and forms pictures through the brain. The way the heart pumps blood through miles of veins giving life to the body. And the enormous amounts of information coded inside a pin drop of DNA all reveal God. Cosmological, chemical, and biological evolution cannot account for the development of such a complex existence that we dwell in today, even given billions of years. Our bodies match what the Bible says—In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Gen. 1:1) and that God made all things according to their kinds (Gen. 1). The design of our existence declares the existence of God.

The Canon of Scripture

The canon of Scripture declares that God is real. The Bible paints a picture of people, places, events, weapons, prophecies, promises, and nations (to name a few). The external evidence of archaeological discoveries (ex., Hezekiah’s Tunnel (2 Chron. 32:1–8, 30)), non-Christian writings (Tacitus, Josephus), and science (Life is in the blood (Lev. 17:11)) affirms truths of what we read in Scripture. The internal evidence demonstrates eye-witness authors (or companions of eye-witnesses) that claimed to tell the truth (1 John 1:1–3) and to write history (Luke 1:1–3). The sixty six books of the Bible, written by over forty different authors, on three different continents, in three different languages, on hundreds of controversial topics all speak with one voice—the voice of God. Did the message get lost in translation? No, the number of manuscript copies (thousands in the Greek alone), the time between the copies, and the location of the copies demonstrate the Bible is a well preserved document from antiquity. The message they had, we now have. And that message declares the eternal glory and saving grace of God Almighty.

The Christ

Finally, Christ Jesus declares that God is real. The cosmos, complexity of life, and canon of Scripture help funnel us to Jesus Christ. He revealed God in His life (John 1:14–18), His death (John 17:1–5), and His resurrection (Acts 2:32). He spoke the words of God (Heb. 1:1–2), and did the works of God (John 5:16–17). Jesus Himself said to Phillip (John 14:9), “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.”

The universe is a funnel that consistently and ultimately reveals God. Wherever one begins in the understanding of God’s universe, it slides them down from one truth to another to the final saving truth found in Jesus Christ alone. The beginning, complexity, laws, and testimonies of the universe all declare that God is real.

The Psalmists said it well (24:1), “The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein.” We need not be afraid of evidence brought forth to denounce God’s existence, for all the evidence belongs to Him.

soli deo gloria
