Strengthened by Grace
2 Timothy 2:1 - You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus
Water is an amazing substance. It can be used to wash away dirt. You can drink it and nourish your body. It can be medicinal. You can swim and soak in large quantities of it. It can refresh a dry mouth in the morning. It is remarkable the versatility and blessing that water is to human beings. God’s grace is the water of our everyday and eternal lives. It is the oasis in our desert of sin. It is the refreshment in the heat of the day. It is our cleansing, our renewal, and our strength.
Timothy is struggling with his own weakness and the suffering that comes with following Jesus. What does Paul his mentor and brother in the faith do? He applies God’s grace. He commands Timothy to be strengthened by the grace, the very grace given to us in Christ Jesus. In other words, come and drink of the water that is God’s grace in relationship with Jesus and find the ability to function effectively. Drink of His grace and then meet suffering with resolve. Stand under the waterfall of God’s grace and then meet shame with pride in Jesus. God’s grace—His undeserved favor and kindness—meets the ongoing needs and struggles of His children. By grace, God comes to our aid, bears us up, and makes us fruitful.1
When life hurts, where do you turn for strength? When you want to quit, what do you do next? We must turn to God’s grace in union with Jesus Christ.
Grace is God’s freely given kindness to us both in salvation and now in this life. All Christians are recipients of this grace and have it to go back to for everything, especially suffering. Do you need strength? Do you need a refreshing dear brother or sister in Christ? Come to God and drink, bathe, and be strengthened forever by His grace in Christ alone. Remember the cross of your salvation. Remember His abiding presence. Remember His effective power.
May the lyrics of “All Who Are Thirsty” supercharge your soul today!
All who are thirsty
All who are weak
Come to the fountain
Dip your heart in the stream of life
Let the pain and the sorrow
Be washed away
In the waves of His mercy
As deep cries out to deep
(We sing)
Come Lord Jesus come

1Robert W. Yarbrough states this fully when he says, “Whatever Timothy might need to face his challenges—and both 1 and 2 Timothy bristle with references to them—“grace” is the shorthand Paul uses here to summarize God’s limitless undeserved means of coming to his aid, bearing him through difficulties, and making his labors fruitful.” See Robert W. Yarbrough, The Letters to Timothy and Titus, ed. D. A. Carson, Pillar New Testament Commentary (Grand Rapids, MI; London: William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company; Apollos, 2018), 371.
