Jesus Remains in the Tomb
Mark 15:33
Darkness came upon the land on Friday from noon till three pm. Yet darkness still remained on the hearts of God’s people on Saturday. The Lord’s body resided in the tomb—dead and alone. Joy was absent. Fear resided. Reflection began to sink in. He really did die! The whole city was able to see it. He bled from His head, His hands, His feet, and He cried out, “It is finished.”
Did the disciples miss Him? Did they miss His voice? His touch? The past few years may have crept into their minds. How could this happen? He did so many miracles. He spoke to the sea and calmed it. He turned water into wine. The blind man saw again. The mute spoke. Leprosy was cured. The paralytic stood up. The dead girl was raised to life. “How are we to make sense of all this,” they may have wondered?
Saturday remains a mystery to us what the original disciples were thinking. But the past six days of holy week were instructive for them and for us.
Remember Sunday: Jesus publicly declares Himself as God’s Messiah
Remember Monday: Jesus pronounces judgments
Remember Tuesday: Jesus will return
Remember Thursday: Jesus promises the New Covenant
Remember Friday: Jesus atones for sins
Saturday must have felt like the longest day of the week. But it was the quiet before heaven’s storm of light. The greatest promises in history were about to shine forth and be fulfilled.
Application: Wait upon the Lord. He will fulfill His word.
Prayer: As you fulfill your promises in your good timing, bless us Lord to wait on you in faith, hope, and love.
