Biblical Disciplines
Biblical disciplines (also known as spiritual disciplines) are commonly thought of as the Christian’s basic practices. We might think of prayer, bible study, Scripture memorization, giving, and evangelism to name a few. These are great practices and definitely belong to the Christian life. Nevertheless, biblical disciplines encompass much more.
God calls His children to:
- humility (Phil. 2:3; 1 Peter 5:5),
- thankfulness (1 Thess 5:18)
- trust (Prov. 3:5–6)
- joy (1 Thess. 5:16)
- hospitality (Rom. 12:13)
- mercy (Col. 3:12)
- love (Luke 6:35)
- confession (Rom. 10:9; Matt. 6:12)
- patience (Col. 3:12)
- meekness (Col. 3:12)
Do we overlook these biblical disciplines? Let us not. God has called His holy and beloved kids to exercise themselves toward godliness (1 Tim. 4:7). We are to take up and put on the attributes that God has given us to wear. And oh what a blessing to live out the attributes of God!
Pick one action from the list above this week and do it. Think about it daily. Purposefully extend it to God and others. And watch your sanctification take on beautiful new horizons.
There is a section entitled “Biblical Disciplines” on the Branch Church App. For more detailed understanding and specific application, check them out there.
